Rising to Success
The Yamaha Corporation was founded in 1887 by the entrepreneur Torakusu Yamaha in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The company began as a manufacturer of musical instruments, starting with reed organs and upright pianos. You can see this origin reflected in the design of the Yamaha® logo that pictures three interlocking tuning forks.
Business was steady until the Japanese economy was rattled by World War II. During the postwar period, Yamaha joined many other Japanese companies in repurposing wartime production equipment for commercial use. The company president at that time, Genichi Kawakami, decided to begin manufacturing motorcycles.
The success of these motorcycles resulted in the founding of the Yamaha Motor Company, which split from the Yamaha Corporation in 1955.
Branching Out
Determined to get ahead in the growing motorsports industry, Yamaha improved their products by leaps and bounds. The young brand soon proved itself on the racetrack as a worthy competitor to Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and other legendary Japanese motorcycle makers.
After their bikes took the market by storm, the Yamaha Motor Company sought to diversify their product range. Over time this lineup grew to include all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, golf carts, personal watercrafts, automobile engines, scooters, generators, and even helicopters!
Yamaha has made particular headway in the field of personal watercrafts. The first Waverunner® debuted in 1986 with an innovative design that broke new ground for the watersports industry. Meanwhile, powersports models like the Kodiak® ATV are known to be some of the most durable and reliable off-roaders out there.
Leading the Way
The Yamaha Motor Company continues to uphold the spirit of resilience and ingenuity that led to its founding in postwar Japan. They stand today as a world leader in multiple industries. Yamaha easily tops the market for personal watercrafts, and their motorcycle sales are second in the world. With the company still expanding and adding more product lines, we look forward to many more advancements from Yamaha in the years to come.
