Indian Motorcycle, America's first motorcycle company, is currently owned and made by Polaris Industries, a major American manufacturer of powersports vehicles. Polaris acquired the brand in 2011, reviving it with a blend of classic styling and modern engineering. Each Indian bike is assembled by riders by hand in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Here we will explore some of the history of these iconic motorcycles.

Overview and History

Founding and Early Years

  • Indian Motorcycle was established in 1901 by George M. Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom in Springfield, Massachusetts, making it America's first motorcycle company.

  • The company quickly gained fame for innovation, introducing chain drives and streamlined styling as early as 1902.

  • In 1903, co-founder Oscar Hedstrom set a world speed record of 56 mph, and by 1904, Indian adopted its iconic deep red color.

Growth and Racing Success

  • Indian became the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer during the 1910s, dominating racing circuits and setting numerous records.

  • The company introduced the first V-twin production motorcycle in 1907, which set the standard for American motorcycle design.

  • Indian motorcycles were widely used by the U.S. military during both World Wars, with models like the Powerplus and the 841 serving in combat roles.

Decline and Hiatus

  • After WWII, Indian Motorcycles struggled to compete with rivals and changing consumer tastes. Production ceased in 1953 after a series of ownership changes and financial difficulties.

  • The brand name passed through various hands, with several attempts to revive it, but none achieved lasting success until the 21st century.

Revival Under Polaris

  • In 2011, Polaris Industries acquired Indian Motorcycle, merging its operations and launching a new era for the brand.

  • Polaris revitalized Indian with a lineup that honors its heritage, introducing new models with advanced technology and classic design cues, such as the Chief, Scout, and Roadmaster.
